Board of Supervisor Election Information

Want to be an SWCD supervisor?  

Filing for candidates is May 21 - June 4, 2024

 

SWCD supervisor positions are filled through general elections which will take place on November 5, 2024. Those interested in running for Supervisor should file at the County Auditor’s office from May 21, - June 4, 2024, at 5 p.m.

 

General Information

An elected board of five Supervisors governs Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) in Minnesota.  Each board member represents a district within the County, and each district is defined by municipal boundaries.

 

DISTRICT TO BE FILLED BY ELECTION:

     District I - Wolverton, Deerhorn, Roberts, Mitchell, McCauleyville, and Nordick

     District III - Connelly, Nelsen, Andrea, Meadows, and Akron 

     District IV - Breckenridge, Sunnyside, West/East Brandrup, and West/East Campbell 

 

 

Seats/Terms

The office of SWCD Supervisor is a four-year term.  Candidates are elected in the general election.  An election of Supervisors for the Wilkin SWCD is held every two years, and the seats are filled with a 4-year term.  A Supervisor shall hold office until his or her successor has been elected or qualified.  The office of the Supervisor is a nonpartisan office, and each supervisor represents the entire district.  Currently, Wilkin SWCD Supervisors are elected at-large – meaning that all eligible voters throughout Wilkin County are able to vote for the open positions.

 

Board Meetings & Compensation

The Wilkin SWCD Board of Supervisors meets the second Wednesday each month at 7:00 a.m. (April - October) and 8:00 a.m. (November - March) in the Wilkin SWCD office located within the USDA Service Center in Breckenridge.  Supervisors receive a per diem for Board meetings, which is currently $125 per meeting.  They are also reimbursed for mileage and any expenses related to the Supervisor position.

 

How and when can I file for the SWCD Supervisor position?

You must file a “Minnesota Affidavit of Candidacy” with the Wilkin County Auditors office (located in Breckenridge).  The filing fee is $20.  This affidavit must be filed during the filing period, which is May 21 - June 4, 2024.

 

Who is eligible to file for the Supervisor positions?

Any eligible voter residing in the nomination district of the current vacancy.

 

What happens if I win the election?

The County Auditor fills out a “Certificate of Election” that will be sent to you.  You will be sworn in at the January Board meeting in 2025, by taking the Oath of Office, and will start your supervisor role with the Wilkin SWCD.
