Disabled Veterans - Market Value Exclusion on Homestead Property

Minnesota law provides full or partial valuation property tax exclusion for homesteads of disabled veterans with a disability rating of 70 percent or greater, as determined by the United States Department of Veteran Affairs.
 
Who is Eligible?
United States Military Veterans with 70 percent or more disability
-You may be eligible for a market value exclusion of up to $150,000 on homestead property if you are a United States military veteran with a service-connected disability of 70 percent or more. 
United States Military Veterans with Total and Permanent Disability
-You may be eligible for a market value exclusion of up to $300,000 on homestead property if you are a United States military veteran with total (100 percent) and permanent service-connected disability. 

Surviving Spouses of...
-United States Military Veterans with Total and Permanent Disability: You may be eligible for a market value exclusion of up to $300,000 if you are the surviving spouse of a deceased United States veteran with total (100 percent) and permanent service-connected disability who was previously receiving the exclusion on the homestead property.
-United States Military Service Members Who Died in Active Duty: You may be eligible for a market value exclusion of up to $300,000 if you are the surviving spouse of a deceased United States service member who died due to a service-connected cause while serving honorably in active duty, as long as you file within two years of the service member's death.

Primary Family Caregivers of United States Military Veterans with 70 percent or more disability
-You may be eligible for the same benefit as the veteran on your homestead property if you are the "primary family caregiver" for an eligible veteran.  
 
How do I Apply?
1. Complete the appropriate application fully and legibly.
2. Complete a new Homestead Application
3. Include all proper documentation
4. Mail the application and required documentation to the Wilkin County Assessors Office, PO Box 167, Breckenridge, MN 56520 by July 1 each year to be eligible for an exclusion beginning with taxes payable the next year.
